How to choose the right wrapping business

Price is only part of the picture. Here are seven things to check before you choose who wraps your car, windows or facade.

When you ask several businesses for a price on wrapping, the prices often differ a lot. The lowest price can be a good deal, but it can also mean thinner film, less preparation or a warranty that covers little.

The points below apply whether you are wrapping a car, fitting solar film to windows or getting graphics on a facade. Use them as a checklist.

1. Check that the business is registered

A Norwegian organisation number is the minimum. Look the business up in the Brønnøysund Register Centre and check that it is active, which industry it is registered in and whether it is VAT-registered. Businesses on Foliemarked must be verified before they get access to requests.

2. Look at previous work

Ask for photos of jobs similar to yours. A business that is good at window film for commercial buildings is not necessarily right for a full wrap of a car with many curves. Look closely at edges, corners and transitions.

3. Ask which film they use

Cars usually get cast film, which can be stretched over curves and keeps its shape over time. Calendered film is cheaper and works well on flat surfaces, but can shrink a little over the years. Ask for the brand and product series so you can compare prices directly.

4. Clarify the warranty and what it covers

There are often two warranties. The manufacturer warrants the film itself, for example against fading and cracking. The business warrants the installation, such as bubbles, loose edges and lifting corners. Ask how long each lasts and what voids it.

5. Compare prices on equal terms

Two prices can look alike and still describe completely different jobs. A price that includes door frames and removing handles means more work, but a cleaner result.

What the estimate should state

  • Film type, brand and product series
  • Which surfaces are covered, for example door frames, mirrors and inner edges
  • Whether removing handles, trim and lights is included
  • Cleaning and preparation before installation
  • Time needed and when the job is finished
  • Warranty on both material and installation

6. Ask about experience from real jobs

Other customers' experience is worth most when it relates to an actual job. Ask the business for references from similar jobs, and how communication and the schedule worked.

7. Get the agreement in writing

Price, timing, what is included and the warranty should be in writing before the job starts. An email confirming the agreement is enough, as long as everything is in it. As a consumer you also have rights under the Norwegian Craftsman Services Act.

In brief

  • The business is active in the Brønnøysund Register Centre
  • You have seen photos of similar jobs
  • Film type and brand are stated
  • You know what the warranty covers, and for how long
  • The prices describe the same job
  • The references are from real jobs
  • The agreement is in writing
